Background of the Study
Media has become an influential force in shaping societal perceptions, including the attitudes of students towards education in Owerri West Local Government Area. In recent years, various forms of media, ranging from traditional outlets to digital platforms, have played a pivotal role in framing educational narratives and influencing student motivation (Uche, 2023). The portrayal of education in media messages can enhance or diminish students’ perceptions of academic achievement, thereby affecting their engagement in learning. Current studies reveal that exposure to positive educational content is correlated with higher academic aspirations, while sensationalized media often leads to negative stereotypes and reduced motivation (Adewale, 2024). Moreover, the media’s portrayal of success stories and academic challenges contributes to the formation of attitudes that may either encourage or dissuade educational pursuits. With the proliferation of social media, students are increasingly exposed to diverse perspectives that shape their understanding of education. This study seeks to critically analyze the extent to which media influences student attitudes by examining content trends and audience reception (Ikechukwu, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Students in Owerri West face conflicting messages from media that shape their attitudes towards education. While positive media portrayals can motivate academic pursuits, negative and sensationalized content may lead to disengagement and diminished academic interest (Uche, 2023). The disparity in media messaging creates confusion and inconsistent attitudes, resulting in observable variations in student performance (Adewale, 2024). This study identifies a gap between media influence and educational outcomes, highlighting the need to understand these dynamics. Without clear media guidance, students may struggle to form constructive attitudes towards learning (Ikechukwu, 2025). These issues necessitate an in-depth investigation into media impact for clarity.
